Sony acquires the rights to Robotech and announces plans for a film franchise!

If you were a cartoon lover in the 1980s then you may remember the popular show Robotech. It started out in Japan in 1982 but then was adapted in the United States in 1985.

Sony has just acquired the film rights to Robotech and are already announcing that they are preparing to build it into a live action franchise. The show focused on Earth developing giant robotic mech suits from a crashed alien ship found in the South Pacific. With this new technology, Earth fought off extraterrestrial invasions.

Speaking on behalf of Sony Michael De Luca stated;
"“Robotech is unique in that it has always been a marriage of spectacle with human characters that seem drawn from life. That’s why we are so excited to be working with Mark and Gianni as we move forward on this project. With a history that offers an epic love triangle, a renegade hero, and a world on the brink of extinction, Robotech offers a wide scope and a rich and impressive universe where the story possibilities are endless.”"
Producer Gianni Nunnari also commented;
"“When the rights to Robotech became available we jumped; Mark and I knew it had what big movies in today's world must have if they want to grab everyone: insane visuals AND powerful themes. The characters in Robotech wrestle with both the destructive and redemptive powers of technology; nothing is more relevant today than that.""
A live action Robotech franchise could be extremely cool if done properly. This could also dig Sony out of the hole they have been in with their last few big franchises. Did you watch Robotech when it aired in the 80's? Are you excited to see it being adapted into a film franchise?

*A big thank you goes out to my friend Dean for finding this story for me and bringing it to my attention!
